Buying Affordable Homeowners Insurance

By Fred Franklin

Homeowners insurance is considered to be one of the basic types of insurance that everyone needs to have. Virtually every financial advisor will tell you that if you own a home you must have homeowners insurance, and often lenders won’t let you borrow unless you have homeowners insurance. The exact cost can vary depending on the type of house you own, where you live, the value of your home, and even your insurance company.

Of course, the first question you’ll want to ask the agent is what the premium will be for the type of house you’re considering buying. You may also want to ask what type of discounts they offer. Do they offer discounts to you for being a teacher or fireman? Or do they offer discounts if you purchase both your vehicle and homeowners insurance policy with them?

You may be tempted to just find out what the premium is. After all, it’s more fun to go look at homes, and find out how much counter space is in the kitchen and whether any of the bathrooms have whirlpool tubs than to look at insurance policies. But you should also ask whether the policy protects you from natural disasters. If you get a house in New Orleans, you may want to check into flood insurance. If you live in Texas or Oklahoma, you may want to be sure you there’s some insurance for things like tornadoes.

Remember that every location has its own sets of problems and advantages. You can’t completely insure everything, and you can’t full-proof your life. So don’t get every type of coverage available, but do insure yourself against the biggest dangers in your area.

Don’t just ask whether the policy will cover you in case of a natural disaster. Find out how much money you’d get if you ever had to file a claim.

The good news about homeowners insurance is that it also protects you in case someone sues you. Make sure that your insurance policy has this type of coverage – liability insures the homeowner if he or she gets sued for allegedly having causes property or personal damage to someone else.

Depending upon the type of policy, homeowners insurance can also protect your personal property and possessions. These can include furniture and jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets or rings.

There is no need to wait and wonder about how expensive homeowners insurance is for you. Go to Homeowners Insurance Web site to find out how to get affordable insurance.
