Different Styles And Designs In Balustrades

By Paul J Coleman

A balustrade is a moulded shaft; lathe turned; or of a square shaped structure made of stone, wood or metal; which stands on a unifying support or footings of a handrail or the parapet of a staircase. In this way, they form a balustrade. On its own, a balustrade shaft may be described as the turned form of silver or brass candlestick; an erect furniture support; or the stalk of a brass chandelier.

Balustrades are not only important from the security aspect but they also play a major role in jazzing the interior of the home. Different styles composed of different materials are used as handrails. Balustrades are commonly seen every day and are ubiquitous. The pipes of the balustrades prevent the walls from falling. The stair balustrades are used at homes, offices and buildings; and emphasizes on the style of architecture.

Balustrades are popularly based on the ancient Greek and Roman architecture and the Italian renaissance. The term balaustro is the name of a flower of wild pomegranates. Like the beautiful flowers, the balustrades embellish the beauty of a building. A staircase fitted with the balustrades looks magnificent and increases the substantial value.

The various styles and designs make them an architectural element. The traditional balustrades, still present in some houses, were designed to give a look of a flower bud or a vase. They are curved straight or moulded into other desired shapes. Horizontal balustrading is very famous in the houses. In outlook balustrading the balustrades are arranged in the linear pattern to give a strong and defined structure. Aspect balustrading allows gaps with its tubular horizontal rail.

The shoes offered for square iron balustrades are designed to coat a square peg in a round hole filled with construction adhesive or epoxy. Usually, shoes are used on the floor but you can also use it under the handrails especially in modifying, when replacing wood balustrades which require covering a square balustrade. Shoes are available with or without the set of screws.

Balustrades can be made of many other materials like wood, plaster of Paris, polymer stone, primed wood, cast stone, metals, wrought iron and polyurethane. These materials can be moulded in any form of balustrade and can be used according to the need or the place of insertion.

These balustrades are made in various kinds of designs; one of the most famous designs is based on the Mughal motifs. Other famous designs are European like Baroque, Neoclassicism, twist-turned design and Solomonic Columns.

In modern houses, the architects are always concerned for the utilization of space. You can choose a spiral, or a helical staircase with spiral banisters. You can choose from the plainest to the most ornate balustrades for your homes or buildings. The most sought-after balustrade-designs for the buildings are the horizontal balustrades. A tubular horizontal rail gives more openness to the buildings. A simple yet appealing balustrade can be made by simply turning or curving around the staircase. This style works, even if the railing is made up of wood, a combination of wood or wrought iron or iron. As long as the balustrade goes with your dcor, it adds a graceful feel to your home and creates an impact on the atmosphere of your home and the style statement it makes.
