Giving Your Doorman A Tip During The Holidays – Items To Be Aware Of

By Jeff Ross

Providing a tip for doormen is a very kind and sincere gesture; however, there is quite a bit of debate about how to do this efficiently during the holiday season. Some will go ahead and provide doormen with generous tips, while other refuse to do so.

Generally though, most people just tip. This is not just because they feel the person has earned it, but also because they want to be treated well in the future.

Tips range from country to country, state or state, city to city. It is common for doormen residing in New York City to receive twenty or fifty dollar tips, sometimes more. It is important to consider a few different factors that you should use to evaluate how much an appropriate tip is.

For example, if you reside in a luxurious apartment, chances are the tip will be higher. Other important factors include a building’s size, service quality, and the total number of doormen within the apartment. If you are new to the apartment, ask your neighbors what an appropriate tip would be.

In other apartments, the management companies or cooperative boards offer guidelines or suggestions. Their participation towards holiday tipping can range from merely providing a roster of the building’s staff to suggesting a specific amount for each staff. Some people prefer this since it will keep their holiday tipping expenses more manageable.

Sometimes, residents will pool their funds together and the total amount will be split equally among all doormen. This ensures you are not making any tipping errors.

Some tenants go the extra mile with including small gifts along with the cash tips such as a bottle of their favorite liquor or baked goods. As a rule of thumb, tipping shouldn’t make one feel like money is being thrown around.

It pays to find out what usually happens in your complex, then adhere to that. Give the tip in an envelope with a note of appreciation, this is usually the nicest way to do it.
