How to Pack Everything You Own without Losing Your Sanity
The most important thing you can do to make moving easier is to make a schedule showing how much time you’ll spend packing each day, and where you’ll start. Always allow more time than you think you’ll need; if you don’t end up spending all of your budgeted time on packing, you’ll have time to relax or go out and do something fun before it’s time to hit the road.
Most rooms take around two days to pack, but often there are other chores to do as well, such as painting, repairs, and replacing fixtures. Don’t forget to include time for these projects in your overall time estimate. The more rooms you have, and the more people living in them, the more time you’ll need to allow yourself.
Most people dread packing because it’s tedious and takes a lot of effort. It is hard work, but if you use it as an opportunity to reduce the clutter in your life as you pack you’ll spend much less time unpacking in your new home, and save a lot of wear and tear on your back, arms and legs as well.
If you start by clearing out your closets, you can stack your packed boxes in them, instead of having them scattered around to trip over. Having the boxes stashed out of the way will allow you to keep to your normal routine as much as possible.
Seasonal items should always be among the first things you pack. You won’t miss them, even if they stay in boxes for several weeks.
If you have children, chances are they have lots of outgrown clothing and toys that are no longer played with. Help them decide what they’ll keep, and what they can live without. Donating the things they part with to charity is a good way to help them let go of unnecessary items and learn an important life lesson about sharing with the less fortunate.
In the long run, letting practicality win out over sentimentality will make every aspect of your move easier; it will save you a lot of unpacking time on the other end, and you’ll spend less on getting your things to your new home.
