Moving to NYC Without My Brother
By Laura Hawn
It was going to be a huge move. We had lived in the same place for quite awhile, and it wasn’t exactly the busiest place in the world. It was within walking distance of lots of family owned restaurants and small mom-and-pop shops, and we loved it there. When we moved, we had hoped we might never leave the place, that one of us would get the house and pass it on to our kids. Unfortunately , this wasn’t going to be.
There was a huge storm a couple of months back, which completely destroyed our home. There was nothing left but the foundation. We had friends who came and said they’d try and reconstruct it, but the costs were simply too high, and luck wasn’t on our side. Our house owner’s insurance had run out just days before the huge storm, so it was paying for nothing. So, without any other choice, we had to move.
Mom had friends in New York, so she called them up and asked if they knew of any NYC movers that would also come out to where we were and help move us. Luckily, they actually did. There was just one problem with our moving plan, though; my brother, now grown, refused to come with us.
My brother has always been stubborn but I didn’t think he’d outright refuse to keep the family together. He was determined to stay where he was, and to reconstruct the house “With my bare hands” if he had to. He even refused to do any online searches for movers NYC or for any storage places in NYC. He just kept organizing things to get the house built again.
So as mom and I packed up what was left of our things, he was out at the destroyed house trying to clean things up, or at a friend’s house trying to organize when they were going to begin to rebuild. The place we rented in NYC was ready, but my brother wasn’t. We had to leave him behind. I am hoping he does rebuild the house so we will be able to move back, but I know that even if he does, it will take a very long time.
