The Democracy Of Costa Rica
By Adam Evans

Costa Rica has an unparalleled social security system and parliamentary democracy. Since the people of the region distribute land, wealth and power more equitably as compared to other regions, Costa Rica ranks top notch among all the other Latin American countries. The economic, social and political stability have magnetically attracted the entrepreneurs worldwide to thrive and prosper in the region with a friendly open arm welcome.
Ed Mercer, the “Co Owner of Ventana Del Pacifico”, has made the country of Costa Rica his home venturing into the land development business. Compassionately known as Mr. Costa Rica, Ed not only generously supported the humanitarian causes but also diverted a fraction of every sale done by his real estate company to solve the infrastructural problems of Costa Rica. Also, Ed provided necessary roads and buses as a mode of transport for small children who had to walk miles just to reach their school.
A buyer, who has purchased Ed’s real estate investment property, recounts his impression about Ed Mercer. He says that Ed is a real person filled to the brim with honesty and integrity. In his own words,”If Ed says he is going to do something, you can take it to the bank. When you deal with a staff of 500 people and you are building a city, of course some things will be challenging. You can bet your last dollar that Ed will make it right.”
Furthermore, his organization named Edward R. Mercer Foundation is devoted to the betterment of this world by means of ecological conservation and education. Ed Mercer has also been a member of Greenpeace, Habit for Humanity, the Audubon Society, National Geographic and the World Wildlife Fund. He has been a regular contributor to The Performance Magazine with Bill Cosby and Arnold Schwarzenegger as well.
Besides promoting road and railroad development, it really attracted the foreign capital and immigrant merchants. The country’s more equitable land tenure patterns and the lack of Indian Ladino racial tension averted the growing militarism, which was widely rampant in the neighboring countries of Costa Rica. President Tomas approached the American engineers for building the railroad from the settled central plateau over the rugged mountains to Puerto Limon in 1871 and Minor Cooper Keith won the railroad special considerations.
Due to unique geographical and cultural factors, an enduring consolidation of the social patterns occurred in Ed’s adopted home. The most neglected region of the colonial Central America, Costa Rica transformed with the advent of coffee like Guatemala and El Salvador. It really attracted the foreign capital and immigrant merchants, besides promoting road and railroad development. The country’s more equitable land tenure patterns and the lack of Indian Ladino racial tension averted the growing militarism, which was widely prevalent in the neighboring countries of Costa Rica. President Tomas approached the American engineers for building the railroad (from the settled central plateau over the rugged mountains to Puerto Limon) in 1871 and Minor Cooper Keith won the railroad concession.
Keith finished the San Jose-Puerto Limon railroad in1890; building a vast banana empire expanding his United Fruit Company to Guatemala and Honduras. The company not only funded the national debt but also ran the railroad. During the First World War, the past President Alfredo defended the US American oil interests and handled the economy quite poorly and coffee prices took a sharp downturn. During the Second World War, President Calderon declared war on Germany confiscating the German properties in banking and coffee. He also pushed major reforms to expand the health care, creating the Social Security system with multiple benefits. Later, President Carazo tried to convince the Sandinistas to install a democratic government but failed. This may be considered as a beginning of a period in the Costa Rican history that shall test the foundations of the country’s democracy.
