The Differences of Moving to NYC Since September 11th
By Laura Hawn
The catastrophe of September 11th does not need described in detail. It is a well known part of history today. Thousands of people died, and the skyline of New York City was forever changed. The skyline was not the only thing to change after the disaster, though. The way people live there has also changed. Costs in NYC have always been high, but recently, they have gone up even more.
People are more distrustful of strangers moving into the city, especially those who are not the same race as they are. While it has always been busy and noisy, as the landmarks changed, so did the atmosphere. New Yorkers haven’t ever been called the nicest folks in the world, but recently they have seemed to become more closed minded and suspicious.
While it’s illegal to do, many landlords in NYC will now refuse to rent to any person of Arabian descent, or to Muslims. NYC movers will provide help to move any person to NYC, but finding a studio in the first place can be exceedingly troublesome for anyone who isn’t rich and Caucasian.
A friend of mine, who has Arab blood, found this out first hand. He was so excited; he’d finally landed a great job in the center of NYC. He found movers NYC to move all his things, but then he had lots of difficulty finding a place to live. Landlord after landlord turned him down, never giving him a decent recent. Some would lie the moment they saw him, saying “Sorry, it has been rented,” but then he’d see it in the paper again a couple days later.
Others would pick up on the little bit of an accent he has while talking on the phone with him, and would hang up immediately. What finally ended up happening was his company had to go with him to the house and help him to get it. The fact that they were forced to do that is really dumb, though. My friend is no more of a terrorist than I am, yet he gets treated like one.
