The makers of the TV sitcom ‘Home Improvement’ created an interesting pun when they used the phrase to play on the double meaning of the phrase. It can refer to the improvement in relations between people living in a home or to physical renovations such as the addition of rooms to accommodate more people comfortably.

The pun is apt because the nesting instinct does appear to be just as intricately woven into the DNA of human beings as it is in the tiniest of birds. Almost as soon as a house changes hands the renovators vans appear outside. Walls come crashing down, new ones go up and painters splash color about in different tones and shades.

Renovation is a good industry to be in because the process never ends. Like birds bringing twigs and branches to add to a nest, women set out to shop, and come home with cushions, carpets and small items that they place strategically to amend some little flaw that they have noticed. Sometimes when an item is too big a delivery van appears and unloads a huge piece of furniture.

The kinds of enhancements that can be made range from slight to massive; from a few inexpensive but effective alterations to fundamental reorganization of the whole living space, Everything depends upon the whims, fancies and means of the owners. This makes the area one of glorious individuality which can be expressed in one’s personal space.

Alterations can easily turn out to be misguided, and when this happens after a large investment it may be difficult to admit the mistake. A large workshop added to the side of a house may please a carpentry minded man but ruin what was a pleasing outline. It is important to take professional advice before launching expensive additions.

It is not only tastes and needs that determine the kinds of home improvements that can be made. They can be expensive and involve extra loans taken out against the value of the property. In many cases the interest paid can be considerable and a better decision could be to work away within an available budget making small but pleasing enhancements until the day arrives that six lucky numbers come up in the lottery allowing the winner to indulge in a personal swimming pool and sauna.
