A Simple Guide To The Proper Way To Clean A Handgun Safely From Alliance Armament

By Robert Witherspoon

If you want to own handguns and shoot them for recreation or in competitions, learning the proper way to clean a handgun is essential. Over time, dirt and grime can build up that will destroy the gun if it is not cleared away. By maintaining your handguns carefully they will serve you well in the years to come. You need to know what kind of handgun you are dealing with and what special steps need to be taken so that you do not inadvertently damage the gun or injure yourself in the process. Learning the proper way to clean the gun is critical because if you do not know how to do so, you may accidentally injure yourself or damage the gun and destroy its accuracy.

You should make sure that you have a kit put together that includes the tools and supplies you will be using. You should also ensure that you have a clean, secure place where you can work. You want to make sure that you cannot injure anyone when you are cleaning it and without the proper solvents, tools, cloths and oils you will not be able to clean your weapon properly.

You then need to know how to ensure that the gun is not loaded. There are several places that a round can sit. The first is in a magazine attached to the gun. Follow the instructions you have been given and remove the magazine. Then, slide the bolt back and put your finger in the chamber. Feel around quickly to make sure that there are no rounds. The third area that rounds can sit is in the well. Again, feel for it with a finger. Never check by looking down the barrel. This is one way to get shot in the head, which is usually fatal.

Once you know it is not loaded, you can take the slide off by cocking the hammer and pulling on the take down tabs. The slide will move forward and you can remove it. Clean the slide, the frame, the guide rod and the barrel as well as the recoil spring. Use solvent to do so.

Guns are cleaned by removing the build-up of carbon and unburned gun powder. Cleaning can also remove any skin oils that have transferred to the gun due to handling. By using solvent to break up the residues and a brush and cloth to wipe them off, you can clean your gun very safely and effectively. Clean the barrel inside and outside. Use special brushes and tools that come in a cleaning kit to do so. Also eyeball the pieces in order to make sure there are no cracks or chips that will need to be repaired. Finally, after the cloths stay clean when the gun is wiped and there is no more residue it can be reassembled.

Once the gun is reassembled, it needs to be rubbed with oil before it is stored. Make sure that you do not use a massive amount but you want to make sure that the gun is protected. If you maintain your gun properly and learn the proper way to clean a handgun you can be sure that your weapon will function well whenever you need it.
