Astonishing Transfer Request By Darren Bent To Join Villa
The Transfer market kicked into its usual unpredictable madness yesterday when Sunderland striker, Darren Bent handed in a transfer request in the wake of a mega offer from Aston Villa.
The struggling Midlands club are said to have tabled an offer of 18million, which could eventually rise to as much as 24million over time. Villa currently sit precariously above the relegation zone, with only five goals keeping them above Wolves in 18th position. Rather than hope that Gerard Houllier’s young team can play their way up the table, Villa owner Randy Lerner has clearly decided to hand the Frenchman the money to buy his way out of trouble and Houllier has identified Bent as the man to fire them up the table.
This must surely irk the previous manager Martin O’Neill who decided to leave Villa at the end of last season because of stinginess of the club to buy better players during transfers. It seems as if Lerner has either changed his mind or his arm has been twisted to spend money on better players what with poor performance of the current team in Premier League games.
All the transfer activity should certainly reduce some stress for Gerard Houllier as well as motivate Aston Villa supporters and fans that things may take a turn for the better. It has raised the hackles of Martin O’Neill who was thought to have left due to financial constraints in Aston Villa for the transfer market. It can be assumed that either Lerner has had a change of mind with regards to his earlier miserly approach or has been forced to spend by necessity known the club’s critical condition in the Premier League.
If all these transfers go through successfully, Houllier would be quite relieved, with a great burden off his back. It will also indicate to the Villa fans the club knows and believes in the manager, that the fight is yet to be fought and things can be worked out in Villa’s favour. Houllier has not had a moment’s peace since his joining last September. The worse part was his team was able to score only three wins out of 18 League games. Not only that, they lost control and the game to their nemesis Birmingham City in the Carling Cup quarter finals.
Most of the poor form of the team has been blamed on successive injuries and suspensions of many important players with the inclusion of Emile Heskey and captain of the club, Stiliyan Petrov. Thus Houllier, the former manager from Liverpool had no choice but to work things out with young and inexperienced players of the team for a majority of the League game time. It is true that out of all the new players Marc Albrighton, Nathan Delfounseo and Barry Bannan seem to have a shining future. However, Houllier would most definitely not want to rely completely and heavily only on these youth only in the next season.
Houllier is worried about goals and strikers for Premier League. Emile Heskey was able to come in with a narrow margin but Gabby Agbonlahor and John Carew failed to make the grades with zero score in the League games. No surprise then that Aston Villa is ready to shell cash and grasp best goal scorer for Premier League, seeing that they would need one if they wanted to come to the top.
Elsewhere in the transfer market, Steven Pienaar appeared to move one step closer to the exit door at Goodison Park after Everton agreed a fee with Tottenham Hotspur. It is now down to the South African to decide whether his future lies with Spurs or Chelsea.
