The Giants In Baseball

By Abel Alexander

A huge part of the popularity of baseball may be attributed to the many players who have come and elevated the quality of the game to new heights through the years. Below are some of the players which may be considered legends in the game.

Lapta is a Russian game that is very similar to baseball and started in the 14th century. It is played with two teams with five to ten members each. It also has a pitcher and a batter. The objective is for the batter to hit the ball and be able to run to the opposite side of the track and back before the ball hits him. The difference lies in the bases. Lapta only has two points.

Cricket and Rounders have been played in England for several centuries before baseball came. Cricket is also played in large open circular field. Two teams play against each other with eleven players each side. The objective is to “put out” a “batsman” who tries to prevent a ball thrown by a “bowler” from knocking over “bails” placed on “wickets,” or three upright sticks. When the ball touches the batsman, he needs to run back until the ball is taken by the opposing team.

Rounders is the one that is more similar to baseball. There are also two teams playing against each other. Each team has six to 15 players. They have a batter, a pitcher, a bowling square, hitting square, and fort posts like the posts in baseball. The objective is also the same. The pitcher tosses the ball to the batter who attempts to hit it. If the batter hits the ball, he runs to the first post and so on as new batters come in.

Ted Williams is perhaps the best hitter ever. He spent his whole career with the Red Sox. Like Gehrig, he won the MVP and the Triple Crown. But he did it twice.

There are many more players out there who may be considered the best ones and I’m sure that there are more waiting in the wings, for now these top 5 are the ones that will undoubtedly make the list.
