The Top 9 Major League Baseball Prospects

By James Dobbins

Neftali Feliz. It’s rare to find a pitcher who can throw upwards of one hundred miles per hour on a regular basis. Feliz is one of these. Any pitcher like this at the major league level is extremely dangerous.

Gordon Beckham – He is a five tool player and the first I’ve seen in a while. When he plays he is so hard to retire due to his speed, and if he gets on base he can definitely steal a bag if he wants.

Justin Smoak: One of the biggest power hitting prospects in baseball today, not to mention a great fielder. Smoak could easily be home run king a few times over during the course of his career.

Chris Tillman – This guy has a blistering fastball. He is very dominant, and I can compare him to a Jake Peavy. He will go out there and baffle the opposing batter.

Jason Heyward. A premier hitting prospect who wowed the crowd in St. Louis at the 2009 futures game. His batting practice showcased his power potential, and the Atlanta Braves can’t wait to bring him into the bigs.

Derek Holland: One of the best pitching prospects in the game today. His fastball and curveball stand at the top and many see future Cy Young awards in the cards. It’s hard to say who’s the better prospect between Holland and his teammate Neftali Feliz.

Austin Jackson – 5 tool player! Has all the tools to succeed. Power, speed, glove, average, everything. He will have a huge impact on the aging Yankees.

Matt LaPorta: This left fielder and first basemen had a stint in Cleveland earlier this season, but remains in the minors for now. Until then, a power-hitting monster is making a big impact on the Indians’ farm club, and many predict this 24 year old to be one of the game’s biggest power hitters over the years to come.

James McDonald. This 24 year old Dodgers pitching prospect is drawing comparisons to some of the biggest names in the game. Expect to see him suiting up as a Dodger shortly.

James Dobbins loves the MLB in its present state, but always looks forward to the emergence of the game’s next big names. He regularly makes contributions at RootZoo’s sports talk forum, and loves to be challenged with sports trivia questions whenever possible.
