The Atlanta Hawks have had 5 name changes in the history of the team. The final name change came in 1968 when they officially became the Atlanta Hawks. In 1958 the Hawks won their only NBA title. They’ve also got four conference titles and a division title to their name. Some of the best to ever play for the Hawks are Lou Hudson, Cliff Hagan, Dominique Wilkins, Bob Pettit, Dikembe Mutombo and John Drew. The best players of All time for the Atlanta Hawks are Cliff Hagan, Dominique Wilkins and Bob Pettit.

Cliff Hagan (1956 “1966)

Cliff Hagan was a huge piece of the Hawks title run in 1958. Without Hagan in the mix the franchise could still be in search of its first title. Hagan was reliable scorer and very solid on the defensive end. In his career he was a six time ABA/NBA All-Star and two time All-NBA selection. In his 10 years as a member of the Hawks he averaged 18 points per game.

Dominique Wilkins (1982 “1994)

Wilkins is perhaps the most noted player in franchise history. His electrifying dunks were some of the best the game had ever seen. He was the NBA scoring champ in 1986 and would end his career with nine NBA All-Star appearances and 7 All-NBA selections. In his time with the Hawks, Wilkins averaged 26.4 points per game, and left the organization as the All time leader in minutes, field goals made, and points scored. Wilkins’ style of play not only won over the fans, but it made Atlanta a popular choice among those who bet on the NBA.

Bob Pettit (1954 “1965)

Bob Pettit averaged 26.4 points per game during his time with the Hawks. In terms of NBA records, Pettit is 7th All time in points per game and 3rd All time in NBA rebounds per game. Pettit finished as the franchise’s leader in rebounds. That not all he was known for, Pettit was an 11 time NBA All-Star, 11 time All-NBA selection, 2 time NBA MVP in 1956 and 1959 and Rookie of the Year in 1955. He was a huge part of the Hawks to the NBA Championship in 1958.

Cliff Hagan, Dominique Wilkins and Bob Pettit are remembered for playing the game the way that it was supposed to be played. You could make your case that each one was the best to ever put on a Hawks uniform, but when it comes down to it, Pettit stands alone a top this storied franchise. While Pettit might no be well recognized by the average fan today, his tantalizing play made him a legend of the game and the greatest Atlanta Hawk of All-time.
