The Best Charlotte Bobcats Team Ever
By Jack Jones
When the Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans in 2002, the NBA guaranteed Charlotte that the town would be granted an NBA expansion team for the 2004-05 season. The NBA held up their end of the deal, and the Charlotte Bobcats were introduced to the league.
The first team owner for the Bobcats was Robert L. Johnson, who went out and hired Bernie Bickerstaff to become the clubs first head coach and general manager. The team’s first season featured the likes of Gerald Wallace, Jason Kapono, Primoz Brezec and first-round draft pick Emeka Okafor. As many of you know, it is tough for expansion teams to win immediately. The Bobcats would finish their first season with just 18 wins, and were a public favorite to go against for those who bet on the NBA. Okafor did give the team reason to get excited, as he would go on to win the Rookie of the Year award.
In the 2005 season, the Bobcats drafted point guard Raymond Felton and Sean May in what the team was hoping would be an a massive step in turning this team into a contender. They would finish their second season with a 24-58 record, improving their overall record by eight games. In their third season, the team didn’t play all that well at first until minority owner Michael Jordan informed the organization that Bernie Bickerstaff would be let go at theend of the season. The Bobcats went out with a bang as they finished 11-8 on the way to a 33-49 record.
The team signed Sam Vincent as the team’s 2nd coach, with the expectation the team would be well placed to make the playoffs. The team disappointed though as Vincent seemed to clash with his players. As a consequence, Charlotte finished with a 32-50 record. He was consequently fired after only one year and replaced by Larry Brown. Under Brown’s tutelage the team made the playoffs for the 1st time in franchise history in the 2009-10 season. They finished the season with a 44-38 record before being swept by the Orlando Magic in the first round.
The next year, the team made some moves by trading away Gerald Wallace for picks and role players while also sending veteran center Nazr Mohammed to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Morris Peterson and D.J. White. The team did not fare better as they ended the season with a 34-48 record.
The best team in Charlotte’s really short history has to go to the 2009-10 team.Although they were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Orlando Magic, the incontrovertible fact that they’re the only team to end with a winning record and the sole team to make the postseason, without question has them ranked as the best team in franchise history.
