The Greatest Atlanta Hawks Team Ever
By Jack Jones
The franchise was formed in 1946 as the National Basketball League’s Buffalo Bisons, however 13 games into their first season the team was moved to the Tri-Cities (now Quad-Cities). The team was renamed as the Blackhawks and would make the playoffs in the first season under the control of Red Auerbach. They drafted the legendary Bob Cousy but foolishly traded his rights to the Chicago Stags, which would later become the Boston Celtics. They were one of the worst teams in the NBA till the team moved to Milwaukee in 1951.The franchise wouldn’t last long in Milwaukee. By 1955, the team moved to St. Louis, where they’d change their name to the Hawks.
In St. Louis, the team became serious contenders thanks to the core of Ed Macauley, Cliff Hagan, and Bob Pettit. They would win their only championship came in the 1957-58 season, thanks to Pettit’s 50 points in game 6 of the Finals against the Celtics. They continued to compete at a high level for most of the decade but were not able to put together another championship season.
In 1968, the team was shipped to Atlanta as a result of a new ownership. They’d go on to win a lot of games with a new core of Lou Hudson and Pete Maravich, but several seasons of rebuilding would ensue once Maravich left towna. By the early 80s, thanks to Ted Turner’s ownership, the team became a powerhouse team once again. They added one of the best to play the game Dominique Wilkins in 1982. With a core of Wilkins, Cliff Livingstong, Kevin Willis, Doc Rivers, and Eddie Johnson, Atlanta became playoff contenders for most of the 80s.
Despite all of the regular season success, they would never duplicate their achievements from the 50s. There is hope that the team can break thru with another championship run in the near future. In 2005 they went out and signed Joe Johnson and the expectations once again started to rise. However , despite the talent to be one of the elite teams in the NBA, the current Hawks haven’t been able to make the most of it. Once this team gets it figured out, they are going to be a great team to back if you bet the NBA.
Despite the rich history in Atlanta, the franchise only has one title to show for it. They have had stretches in their storied history where they were consistent contenders but those seasons are haunted by their inability to win another championship. The 1957-58 Hawks are the best team in franchise history. Until another Hawks team is able to make a run at an NBA Championship, the 1957-58 team will hold down the top spot.
