Have you ever heard about the ‘bug out bag’? It is a term that was born from the military expression bail out bag. When the military pilots prepare to land on enemy lands, they arm themselves with this bail out bag, which contains the essential tools for survival. The bug out bag is a borrowed concept in that it contains the survival tools necessary in urban environment.

You have several ways to choose the bug out bag contents. To begin with, you may visit a store to purchase a readymade kit. It contains all the basic necessities. You are free to add your daily requirement of medicines and nutritional supplements to it.

Before you get started you should first draw up a bug out bag checklist adding all the necessary equipment you will need for a 72 hour emergency. There are plenty of bug out bags of different sizes and value available off the shelf, use the contents lists of these bags to decipher your own personal bug out bag checklist.

The things essential for a survivalist to be put in the bug out bags would be those that are indispensible for survival, like, foods that can be preserved for long, things necessary for cooking, water purification kit, water for washing and cooking, fire making tools, first-aid kit and a folding knife. This basic kit for survival though may help you to continue for a while, it may not be sufficient if you do not possess adequate knowledge about how to use it in a time of crisis.

How proficient you want to be in your urban survival will reflect in your bug out bag, from the basic survival gear to being completely self sufficient. The equipment that is now available for your bugout bag can range from solar paneled back packs for charging batteries, laptops and cell phones to portable toilets. You name it and it is available in a handy bug out bag style.

The bag or backpack is probably one of the things you should spend some time considering; you need to make sure it is going to be large enough to hold all your survival gear but not to large that you cannot carry it. It is probably going to get thrown about from time to time so making sure it is durable and very waterproof is essential.

Make sure your entire bug out gear is going to suit your needs and you have not supplemented essentials to take onboard luxury items, this is a common mistake. When you finally have your pack together make sure that its contents are checked regularly; there would be nothing worse than finally grabbing your backpack in an emergency only to find the torch batteries are flat or the food has perished.

A bug out bag is the most essential piece of equipment that could save your life in an emergency. Don’t have the attitude that someone in the neighborhood will have survival gear; make it your responsibility today.. This article, How to Put a Bug Out Bag Together is available for free reprint.
