Channel 4 Announce Paralympic TV Coverage Schedule

By Clare Westwood

Recently it has been reported that channel four have promised to make Paralympic Athletes into household names after and during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Channel four, which is the UK’s official Paralympics covering channel, has promised to show at least 150 hours worth of coverage in the London games. A budget o 500,000 is said to have been put aside to help find and train people with disabilities in order for them to host the coverage.

Later this month channel four are also due to begin showing a series of programmes with the intention of raising the profiles of Paralympic athletes.

It has already been announced that a ten week long magazine programme entitled, ‘That Paralympic Show,’ will be running during the Olympics in 2012. The show is to be covered by Rick Edwards and Paralympic wheelchair basketball medallist Ade Adepitan.

Adepitan has been recorded as saying that channel four has an ‘edgy and fearless’ agenda to the Paralympic games coverage which he hopes will turn athletes into household names.

The acting chief creative officer, Julian Bellamy, has discussed the plans in depth by saying, ‘This is a big job to do. Research we have done… shows that 84% of the British public couldn’t name a single British Paralympian – despite the fact Great Britain came second in the medals table at the Beijing Olympics. It is important that our paralympic athletes are recognised.

It is important that the medal winning Paralympic athletes of Great Britain become recognisable faces to the British public. As Bellamy stated – many of them were part of the 2nd place winning team of Beijing.

The games in London are the first that channel four have ever covered, before this the BBC had covered every Olympics since 1980. Paralympic talent is looking decidedly hopeful for 2012 and many athletes are now looking forward to it.
