Albert Town’s Yam Festival

Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

Albert Town is located in the parish of Trelawny, in central Jamaica. Albert Town is a small little community, but it has a lot of heart. Every year the residents draw thousands of Jamaicans to their town for the Annual Trelawny Yam Festival. It is unclear how the celebrations began, but the dedication to the fun is truly wonderful. Travelers to Jamaica would do well not to miss the Yam Festival, as it affords a wonderful view into Jamaican culture and cuisine.

Usually held in late April, the Yam Festival begins with a set of contests. The first may be the Yam Hill Digging Competition, in which contestants compete to see who can dig up the most yams in the shortest time. Don’t assume it is the men who excel at this event! Since it is usually the women tending the agricultural chores on farms, they are easily the champions!

Other events during this first festival day are a tug-of-war for both adults and children, and a Yam Basket Race. The Yam Basket Race involves contestants heaving huge baskets of yams around an obstacle course, the fastest person wins! Then the Yam Queen Contestants Parade begins, in which judges get to view all the lovely ladies wishing to be crowned Yam Queen.

The second festival day is dedicated to the ladies. The Ms. Trelawny Yam Festival Queen Pageant takes place with all its finery, fashion and fanfare. Ten ladies will show their assets in fashion walks, musical acts and a talent competition. After a long day of pageantry, festival goers are invited to attend a music concert and enjoy local seafood dishes cooked by some of Jamaica’s finest chefs. Day four is dedicated to the 50K Bicycle Race and is always hosted by the Jamaican Cycling Federation. Cash prizes spur on the competitors as they begin their trek at Falmouth and end up in Albert Town.

Finally, day five is the crowning event for the Yam Festival: an all-day cultural show featuring national music stars, a domino tournament, culinary competitions, a children’s donkey parade and dozens of other activities. Of course the newly crowned Yam Festival Queen is on hand to award prizes and promote the agricultural industry in Jamaica. Visit Jamaica and experience the real people by participating in local events. The Yam Festival at Albert Town is a perfect example of local traditions, and you may even get to dig up a few yams!
