Don’t get lost – get navigation equipment for your bike!
Unlike some fortunate creatures, we do not possess an internal navigation system that allows us to effortlessly get from A to B. Although having said that, some people do seem to have a greater natural instinct for not getting lost than others. When it comes to mountain biking at a fast pace at ground level, I think even the best of us would struggle to navigate a twisty-turny course through all that a natural habitat can throw at you. So, how can we follow that trail enjoying the speed and thrill of bouncing over muddy, rocky paths or freewheeling through a musky conifer wood on a bright Sunday morning without the fear of losing at least some of yourself respect by having to stop to phone a friend who can tell you where you are?
You will also want a durable and weatherproof unit that fits well on your handlebars and has features that are easy to see and use. A good mapbase with accurate, detailed maps is also an essential element of a good GPS system suitable for making the right decision quickly no matter what the weather throws at you.
Garmin have some well designed units in particular the Edge range. Obviously, depending on your budget, you can get some great features that range from the Edge 200 with a highly sensitive GPS that tells you how far and how fast and where you are, to the Edge 800 with a colour touch screen and 1:50K OS map compatibility.
The first option is to go for a GPS Navigator which will give you your speed, location and elevation but you will not have any maps to view. Or alternatively, there are now some excellent cycling specific GPS Navigation systems. The market leader is Garmin and specifically their edge models. They have a built-in base map, which will track your performance and you can even add on an additional heart rate monitor as in the Garmin Edge 305. Features it would be worth checking out before investing in this expensive piece of equipment are; ease of attachment to handlebars, map legibility, waterproofness, visibility in a range of light conditions and sensitivity of the GPS to tracking your position under tree cover .
Finally, you could use paper maps and a compass with a small investment in a map holder. If you are not confident that your map reading skills are good enough for navigating at speed, then book yourself onto a navigation course aimed at doing just that; Improving your confidence and navigation skills. The MBO-2 rotating map holder allows you to move the map around 360 degrees. Look out for holders that have space underneath for extra maps and space on top for tucking in your compass ready for use.
