Golf Is About Doing It Your Way

By Elsie Capps

Some beginners think that all they have to do is mimic V.J. Singh’s or Tiger Woods’ every move and voila! Instant golf success!

If that’s how you wish to roll, then chances are you don’t have LeBron’s hops, Brady’s intangibles or Strasburg’s 100-mph arm – or in this case, Tiger Woods’ golf swing.

Let’s be honest – we all have our own way of swinging at the ball. Because of your unique body build, you develop your own individual set of muscles. So if you see the aforementioned greats playing golf one way with their set of muscles, you may not be as successful imitating their technique. Golf will always be individual. Golf is individual in nature, and what is important is finding your own style that works.

To further enhance your natural game, professional coaching can help you correct any faults you may have. But when choosing a professional coach, you’ll need to find someone who won’t try to change the way you play by teaching you his technique when it isn’t appropriate.

If you hire a pro, make sure he is a top notch player. And make sure he isn’t someone who will just let you do your thing and not lift a finger. He should be a coach that will teach you to think out of the box and help you avoid the threats of sand, mud and water. Then you’ll really be getting value for your money!

Once it’s time to play an actual round of 18 holes, you should be decisive when your turn comes around. And if you ever have a lousy game, stick to what worked in the past and avoid unnecessary experimentation. Having gotten that out of the way, you should let it be known that there are some very fundamental things in golf you have to follow. But think of it this way – you will never make a good shot if you’ve got all these different voices (or maybe your coach’s voice in your head with all those different tips and advice) telling you what to do and how to do these things the right way.

Take note of these two things if you wish to move your game to the next level.

Let proper balance be your best friend – it wouldn’t matter what club you are using or what type of shot you are trying to drive in. Proper balance is all you need when shooting the ball in the hole.

Another basic tip is to always keep your eye on the ball. You may choose any stride you want, but make sure you have a clear look at the ball while doing so.

It’s important to do things the right way, and do it your way in golf. And once you finally succeed, maybe this advice will help the naive young kid trying to imitate your every move.
