By Ben Shepard

Golf is a club and ball game played with meticulous accuracy. The contenders named golfers use various types of clubs to play a round of golf. The player is limited to fourteen selected clubs of different lengths and style for the complete round. The golf players then endeavor, to hit the balls down holes on a golf course in the lowest number of strokes.

Golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration to the other players. All players should conduct their selves in a disciplined manner and show sportsmanship and courtesy at all times. This is the spirit of playing the game of golf.

Golf is one of the only ball games that are not played on a standard sized playing area. The playing area of golf courses can vary considerably from between 100 and 160 acres. Each having its own design and course character, most golf courses are now either nine or eighteen hole courses.

In general the game consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the rules. The golf player or his caddie must not take any action to influence the movement or position of the ball as laid down in the rules.

Golf can either be played by match play or stroke play. In match play golf competing sides play against each other over a stipulated round or otherwise declared. In match play golf the game is played by holes, the side that holes its balls in the least amount of strokes wins the game. In a stroke play competition, competitors compete against each other over a stipulated round or rounds. The player who plays the round or stipulated rounds in the least amount of strokes wins the game.

Many holes include hazards of different types, these may be man made such as bunkers or natural hazards as rivers, lakes and dense vegetation. There are special rules that apply if balls full into hazard areas, for example, a water hazard or will not be found the player will be penalized one stroke.
