The Proper Attire For Golfers

By Steve Graves

Golf attire has thankfully progressed from itchy wool. Women used to play in full skirts with blouses up to their chins and down to their wrists – with the big hats that were the fashion of the day. Golf attire is now designed with comfort in mind.

The more exclusive the club, the more strict the dress code. Generally, you cannot wear jeans anywhere – even in the clubhouse after the game. Depending on the course, you might not be allowed to wear shoes with cleats. If you are playing at a new course, you may want to check with them before leaving home, as you don’t want to sit at the 19th hole in your socks!

When buying golf clothing, be very careful. Some more expensive brands will claim more comfort, but the price is not worth it. If you are going to play regularly, you will need two pairs of pants, and a few shirts. A pair of chinos will be substantial for trousers. Cotton is more comfortable during the summer. There are shirts with a hi-tech material to absorb sweat and allow your skin to breathe, but if it’s not in your budget, just go with cotton. There are also materials that are pre-treated to block out the sun’s UV rays – again, your choice will depend on your budget, and you may find a bottle of sunscreen a lot more economical. Lighter colors will reflect sun and keep you cooler.

Fit is very important with golf gear. You swing will be interrupted by a too loose shirt. You might chafe or be uncomfortable if they are too tight. Your golf gear should be comfortable.

Ladies’ golf clothing now offers better, more comfortable clothing. There are companies, such as jeep, that can be worn off the course as well as on. Ladies still are sometimes asked to wear golf skirts, but they don’t have to be full length. Long shorts or pants are generally accepted on most courses. Using a sports bra is a must. There is a lot of walking on the course, as well as movement in a golf swing.

The same rules apply to your shoes. Try not to skimp on these, as you will regret buying inferior or uncomfortable shoes on the second hole let alone after 18. You won’t need to buy the most expensive shows, but you will need as much comfort as you can afford. Use any money you’ve saved on clothing for lessons – far more valuable for any golfer!
