Jason “Mayhem” Miller’s Bully Beatdown, and What It Teaches You
By Scott Buendia_ | April 3, 2009
I grew up as a small kid in home life and at school. Of course this attracted a lot of attention from bullies. I looked like an easy mark, and my brothers knew I was an easy mark (because they conditioned me to be one for awhile). I was shy, introverted, and definitely not good with girls. I probably couldnt have fought my way out of a paper bag. So when you look like a target for bullies, guess what, you are a target for bullies, so growing up, I had a deep understanding of what it meant to be a victim.
Bully Beatdown is the ultimate show for ex nerds like myself. Here’s how it works, the bully is offered 10G’s to accept a fight with an MMA professional. They get a possible $5,000 for surviving the 1st round and $1,000 less for each time they get submitted (grappling only). Then they get $5,000 for surviving the 2nd round (kickboxing only), they get nothing in the 2nd if they can’t survive it. (I’ve yet to see a bully survive the 2nd round). All the money that the bully loses goes to the victim(s) of the bully. Sounds awesome right? But, I know what youre thinking, I understand how this works, but what does this show teach me about fighting/how to deal with bullies. You have to look deep into the show to understand, and look underneath the feet and fists that are thrown. Let me explain.
Here’s what you can learn from Bully Beatdown. 1. A little training goes a long way, none of the fights I’ve seen have had high technical skill involved beyond beginning stuff, except Michael Westbrook does a submission combo in his fight with the bully, but doesn’t do it again in the episode because he didn’t have to. Your basic bully has zero fighting skill and will be overwhelmed by someone who knows what they are doing. Even straight boxing will give you an edge on a bully, if you know how to slip and counter effectively (even against a big man, if your timing is down pat). And if you know about Frank Shamrock’s button theory, you can even do better in a fight against a larger opponent. So get some technical fighting skill like: boxing, grappling (BJJ, or submission wrestling), and also kickboxing. Do this and you’ll make a bully sorry he messed with you.
In the 2nd episode (at least the 2nd one I saw). Our hated bully meets his MMA Pro fighter and it is ex NFL player Michael Westbrook and he looks worried and scared. Now, we all can’t have the size and intimidating muscles of Michael Westbrook, but what you can do is let people know that you know people like him. The best way to do this is to wear your shirt of your gym, this is all the better made by actually listing what you train in on the shirt if it doesn’t already list it. Not only will they be intimidated by what you might know (because bullies want easy fights not ones they could probably lose face in) but who you might know. That might be the ultimate deterrent to bullies.
So to summarize, learn some mixed martial arts and do what you can to not look like youre an easy target. The harder and more of a fight you look like you can muster, the less likely they are to attack you. Watch Bully Beatdown and get some idea from the pros about how to go about doing things. And I promise you, youll have higher self confidence in on time, when dealing with a bully.
