What is the Motorcycle CBT and the CBT Test Price?
If you want to get your motorcycle licence in the UK, you have to complete CBT (compulsory basic training) first. You may feel as though you can already ride but this is the law, so make sure you pay attention and get the most out of the training, because you have to do it anyway! It only takes 8 hours and chances are you will actually learn something new.
CBT is broken into five categories: A, B, C, D and E and each of these must be completed, in order, for the CBT to be successfully completed. This article provides a brief outline of what these training packages consist of, as in what skills you would be expected to have at the end of them.
Element A: Legal requirements. Your trainer is obliged, at law, to ensure you are riding with a legal licence and that your bike, helmet and visibility (wearing an L plate) are safe and in accordance with the relevant legislation. After this is all checked, the trainer will be ready to start walking you through the rest of the course, which is where you will actually learn something.
Element B: On-site practical training. Before you go out onto the public roads with your instructor, you’ll be shown your way around the bike. You’ll see which button turns it on, which turns it off (or where the key goes), plus what the different handle levers do and general checks as to the condition of the bike and if it’s safe to drive. If you get a good instructor he or she will give you lots of useful tips at the same time.
Category C: More Practical On-site Training. This includes how to actually ride the motorcycle, such as indicating and changing lanes, looking in your rear vision mirror, turning left and right and doing U-turns. You are using the same roads as a car when riding a bike, but everything is different and much more dangerous, remember.
Category D: Motorcycle dangers. To prevent you becoming another road fatality statistic, your CBT instructor will make you brutally aware of the dangers associated with riding a bike on public roads (yes, they are many and very real). You will be forced to consider issues to do with alcohol and drug use whilst driving, noticing and reacting to hazards, maintaining proper following distances, dealing with abusive car drivers on the road and generally how to operate the motorcycle in a responsible manner to reduce the danger associated with it.
Element E: Practical aspects of Training (On-Road). This is the part of the test the other elements have been working up to – actually going on the road and being assessed on your real-life performance. Don’t be stressed, but do remember everything your instructor has taught you and particularly those aspects he or she emphasised as each assessor will have particular preferences for how you handle the bike on the road.
If you are wondering about CBT test prices, you should get some quotes from individual providers of CBT, as each assessor and instructor will charge different amounts depending on their business model. When you have found a trainer you are comfortable with and the cost of CBT matches your expectations and budget, go for it. Safe riding!
