Skimboard: That Thing You Do On Sand

Skimboarding started in the year of 1920, the lifeguards at Laguna Beach used wooden board to skim water. Skimboard gained steady popularity when more guys started playing it at Victoria Beach and helped increasing its popularity. Over the time, board becomes wider and smaller and players started developing advance moves and tricks to enjoy sea waves. Instead of just shallow water riding, players started riding farther to enjoy sea.

No doubt, Skimboarding sports is gaining popularity, now a days increasing number of skimboarding contest are conducted by organizations/firms and the increasing number of firms are using this platform to market their own products.

In Europe and North America, these events are carried on by five organizations. The world champion of skim boarders is determined with the help of a contest by one of these organizations.

Although it is a popular activity on beach but skimboarders are also exposed to many physical risk, if skim boarder is not in a position to maintain stability on water than the force of waves can cause fracture of lower limbs. The skim boarding asks for a lot of leg movement as skimboarder is required to run in the direction of water and jump on wave and therefore frequently cause hamstring injury. As skimboarders ride mostly in shallow water and thus not exposed to drowning related accidents.

Skimboarding sports is gaining popularity, now a days skimboarding contest are conducted and growing number of firms are using that platform to market their products.

In skimboard there are two main styles known as Flatland and wave riding. The flatland trick is generally to slide the table on the beach along the waves and very famous among new players. Wave riding is more advanced and done by professional players and involves advance tricks to maneuver on sea waves. There are different type of skim boards are available depending upon budget and experience. For example, Inland board is made of wood and is quite rugged. High performance boards are generally light weight and consists of fiber glass to help balance ride of surfers. There are skim board which are made of Foam, although this kind of boards are extremely lightweight but difficult to handle during windy weather, which is common across beaches.

Overall demand for skimboards are growing and it resulted in entry of good number of firms which are manufacturing these boards. Each company has designated a team rider who will participate in skimboard competitions and represent his company as well. Skimboarding contest are gaining popularity and it also provides an opportunity to firms to market their products. Skimboarding contests are held across North America and Europe. Skimboarding is gaining popularity in many countries such as Australia, Portugal et al and now it has gaining popularity in online media as well. There are plenty of online communities dedicated to skim boarding. The credit for higher popularity also goes mass media publications such as Skim Magazine which was launched in 1999. Skimonline website gets thousands of unique visitors on a daily basis. In many ways skim boarding is a small sports but there is no denying that its popularity is growing linearly.
