The ideal triathlon coach will have a lot of racing experience. This will provide him or her with the necessary knowledge to know how to train others. In addition, it is beneficial to have a history of helping individuals of different fitness and experience levels. This first hand racing expertise and proven ability to use it to help others are qualities a triathlon coach needs.

A coach should first find out if the individual they are working with is familiar with the set up of the triathlon. The race normally includes cycling, swimming and running. All of these are done in succession, one following the other. There are variations on the distances of each part from race to race. If an individual has already signed up for the event they are training for, they should find out course details. The more specifics that are known, the easier it will be to properly tailor training.

After this, the trainee will need their fitness level measured. Someone without an endurance sports background will receive different training than someone who has already competed in long races. Training is designed to take into account the potential of each individual. The starting level, pace of work, and final goal are all determined on a case to case basis.

There are also other factors which affect training plans. These include time, motivation and energy. Individuals who work out daily need a different routine than those who can only work a few times a week. This has nothing to do with differences in ability, only convenience and scheduling flexibility. A parent with a full time job may have less energy as well as time to devote to training.

All of these things must be taken into consideration when devising a long term schedule. This schedule will include workouts in the pool, on the bike path, and on the track. Because three different elements are included in the race, each needs to be built on and improved.

Schedules should have short term goals to measure progress in each of these three components. Special attention should be paid to changes in speed and endurance. Over time, workouts with different distances and intensities are combined and build on each other. This results in balanced improvement without being overly stressful and risking injury.

Coaches need to know the triathlon well, and to impart this knowledge on to those they train. With their trainees, they should come up with a unique program that meets their individual needs. Combining exercises and workouts in a long term schedule, individuals should then be properly prepared to meet their goals.
