What To Consider When Choosing A Swimming Pool

When people are in the market for swimming pools, they have many options. In today’s pool-friendly economy, there are countless choices of style, price, size, and shape from which to select. A wise idea is to sit down and make a list of what need and what you want. Swimming pools can get expensive very quickly, depending what type you buy and what you add to it. However, your first consideration should be safety. Whatever type of swimming pool you end up with, make certain that you post a written safety plan nearby, in a place where all users can see it. If you take care of the safety issue first, you will be free to think about all the fun parts of shopping for swimming pools.

Most people put cost at the top of their list of considerations when purchasing swimming pools. Remember that even the smallest of in-ground swimming pools can be very expensive. If you have done your research, you will become acquainted with price ranges. That way, when you do end up selecting a pool, you will have a good idea of what a fair price is. Typically, in-ground swimming pools cost much more than above-ground units. However, if you are on a limited budget, then the above-ground option might be just what you need.

If you decide to get an in-ground pool, you will have to decide between the two main categories, namely gunite or fiberglass. Gunite swimming pools feature reinforced frames with concrete, sand, and steel. Owners usually put patios or various types of decks around gunite pools. Fiberglass swimming pools are much simpler. They are essentially a shell placed into a hole in your yard. Since fiberglass pools have less support, they don’t last as long as gunite models, but they are certainly the cheapest type of in-ground pool on the market today.

Choose your styling options carefully, as things like jets and heaters can really run up the final tab for swimming pools. Standard pool depth is eight feet, but you might consider a shallow pool, depending on how you plan to use it.

One very good word of advice from veteran pool owners: Design your new swimming pool based upon how you intend to use it. If it will be primarily for entertaining, or as a visual centerpiece of your yard, you will likely not need jets and heaters, or even a diving board. Think of function before committing to form!
