A Bounty Of Help For Single Parents Available!

By Michelle Conner

With the current economy, many a working mother realizes that the one surefire way to improve her family’s lot is to continue her education. With her improved situation in life, she in turn can apply that to her family, helping the country in the process. Still, and this includes single fathers, it seems hard enough holding down a job and rearing one’s children. As it happens, there is more help than most know.

What they probably don’t know is that the country in general is well aware of these dreams. A number of federal agencies, private charitable organizations and corporations are stepping up to help pay everything from tuition and fees to child care, rent relief, food, utilities and other essential expenses. If you need more information about free college, look on the internet.

A good place to start is consulting with the career counselor at an online college. Not only are the tuition and fees of these educational facilities markedly lower than brick-and-mortar schools, but a working parent can schedule their classes around their jobs, taking care of their families and the everyday pressures of life in general. They can also assist in getting financial assistance to cover the enrolling at the school.

From there, the next important step is filling out a Free Application for Free Student Aid (FASFA) form. This is a financial statement breakdown the parent’s situation, including income, taxes and expenses. It will help determine the parent’s level of need, which in turn will determine the scholarships, grants and loans one can get. Here’s a few of basic services one can also apply for:

HUD Section 8 & TANF – A key federal department to approach is the Housing and Urban Development agency. They created Section 8, a program that will help pay rent and housing assistance. Also the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) will supply short term handouts for basic costs, particularly if the funds go towards children.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – This government agency will help working parents with other basic costs. Key to working parents is two programs. The first, Kids Now!, offers free or low-cost health insurance to children. Then there’s the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). It will help with utilities, particularly if there are children involved. There is an abundance of information about college books for free on the web.

Private Charities – Another important sector to look into is the private one. Two such examples of charities that are known for helping working parents are the Sunshine Lady Foundation and CoAbode. In the case of Sunshine Lady, they have set up educational aid for women who suffered from domestic violence. CoAbode is has a very unique approach. It teams single working mothers with others to help cut family costs.

Another excellent source to find more information about free college money is just a phone call away. Dialing 211 will hook up a working parent to all manner of help, including information about education scholarships . After all, when all is said and done, helping a single parent into a better paying job not only helps the family, but the country as a whole.
