Is A Journalism Course Online Going To Help Me Become A Better Writer?

By Kathy McGuinness

Lots of people would love to become a writer, but how do you do it? If you’ve already finished school, then you might look into doing a journalism course online. This way, you can study whilst you maintain your current job, with the view to eventually quitting the day job when you are making enough money from your writing. However, are these courses worth your money and time? Can they turn you into a successful writer?

Check out the content of the course

Check out what areas are covered in your course. Is it all creative, or are there modules on organising your writer’s life, getting published and contacting editors etc. Also, find out who will be marking and moderating your work – will these people be published writers themselves?

Watch out for scams

Some scam courses are available and they promise that you will be making an income from your writing within six months or a year IF you complete the course. However, they put obstacles in the way to ensure that you can not complete the course – such as having to write an extremely lengthy critique as one of your first assignments. Watch out for these scams.

What can I do instead of taking a course?

Often, experience counts for more than qualifications, so why not try to approach some online webzines and ask if you can contribute to them? For instance, if you like the idea of becoming a music journalist, search for some red hot music reviews websites on Google and see what pops up. Email the editor or webmaster asking if you can write for them. You may not get paid, but you will build up a portfolio and make contacts with key industry people, instead of spending money on a journalism course online.
