Sponsored Degrees, sometimes referred to as Employer Funded Study, are a great way to get a degree completely debt free. Increasingly, companies are looking at how they can work with universities to get graduates who know more about their work – one way of doing this is by offering students support and work experience throughout their degree.

Companies and universities are working together more and more to give students work experience both during term time and holidays, and tailoring those studies to prepare students as much as possible for the role they’ll be taking on in sponsoring companies once they’ve got their degree. All in all, it’s a great deal for the companies. And students get a great deal out of sponsored degrees, too – not only do you earn while you learn, almost like an apprenticeship, but you also get a gradual exposure to the working world (as opposed to being dropped right in at the deep end) … and, of course, there’s that all important degree – without tuition fees or a student loan to pay off.

Of course, the degree you get does depend on the company who’s sponsoring you: it’s highly unlikely an aerospace company would sponsor your degree in archaeology, for example. But if your future plans involve the business world, then it’s a pretty safe bet that somewhere out there you’ll find a company offering a sponsored degree in a business-related subject to suit you.

Another major plus of doing an employer sponsored degree is that in addition to getting a salary like any other employee, you gain 3 years of invaluable experience along the way.

Once you’ve found a company offering to sponsor the degree you’re looking for, though, be sure to check the contract between you thoroughly. That’s not to say you’ll be tied to that company for life, with no get-out clause, but it’s best to avoid surprises of any kind on Day One of your full-time job. And before you sign on the dotted line, do make sure the company sponsoring you has the kind of aims and ideals you’re happy with while you’re working there.
