Student loan? What Student Loan? Try Distance Learning instead

One of the most worrying concerns for students leaving school who are contemplating university is the debt associated with it. With the increase in tuition fees there is little wonder as to why young people are now looking for different alternatives.

It’s not all bad news though; there are other ways of getting a degree for less money, for free and even degrees that can see you earning serious money, the answer is distance learning.

Distance learning? As in learning at a distance? Absolutely: as the name implies, learning – at some distance away from school, college or university. Usually this means studying at home (or work, if you’ve got a sympathetic boss) with your course materials delivered to you in the form of books, DVDs, and links to online resources and virtual communities.

Unlike more conventional forms of further education, distance learning gives you the flexibility of studying where and when you want instead of having someone else’s schedule imposed on you.

It is entirely up to you how long it takes you to complete your degree course – it can be as fast or as slowly as you wish – there’s no pressure to finish it in three years.

If you need to earn while you learn, then distance learning is for you. 70% of Open University students are holding down a job and studying for their degree at the same time.

There are many other distance learning providers like the Open University for example, and RDI (or Resource Development International, to give it its full name) that offer a number of good incentives to young people interested in doing a distance learning degree.

The Open University for example, allow students who live at home and earn less than 16,500 per year, to do their courses for free. They will not even take your parent’s income into the equation, which means you don’t get punished for your parent’s salaries.

RDI (Resource Development International) offers a choice of more than 40 different qualifications in more than a dozen different subjects – from nine established universities. If you’re permanently attached to your smartphone, you can dial in for RDI courses, in pretty much the same format as you’d find when you log in with your laptop, so you could even study while you’re commuting to and from work!

By studying via distance learning over a campus-based university, you could save up to 42,791. This together with the flexibility of getting your degree in more comfort and at your own speed are very strong contenders to any traditional university route.
