Discover Exceptional Pittsburgh Ballet Training At The Ballet Academy Of Pittsburgh

By Lela Perkins

Some of the most appealing Pittsburgh Ballet experiences are offered at one of the most professional studios in the city. This is a school that trains young dancers in an organized and sequential fashion. Discovering high level instruction may even be more pleasing when it is provided by those who have called this area home for a long time.

The husband and wife team, Steven and Lindsay Piper, are artistic directors with an eye toward providing top quality instruction. Their team of dance instructors are capable professionals with a passion for sharing the proper foundations of dance with their classes. Steven was a member of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and Lindsay grew up in South Hills. Several on their faculty are from the local area as well.

The faculty works with three basic divisions. Children, Intermediate and Advanced divisions are further divided into graduated learning levels. The children may begin at age 3 and take age-appropriate classes until age 8. There are four levels for children divided into two-year age groups. This allows for gradual and sequential training and immersion in the classical vocabulary of dance.

While the instructors focus on teaching foundational exercises, each student can improve at a personal pace decided by acquired skills. The learning process is enjoyable as dancing is learned gradually. The opportunity to participate in studio performances adds to the excitement. Performances are optional, so that those particularly shy need not feel pressured to be in the public eye before they are ready.

Summer is a busy time in this studio. Campers attending a wide selection of intensives fill the spaces with action. There are camps for beginners that include learning basics, trying on costumes and making crafts related to famous dance stories. Older students can choose to spend their days improving technical skills in classes focused on traditional repertoire, en pointe, or pas de deux. These do assume that requisite skills have been mastered, and often help advanced dancers to prepare for future careers.

Each Winter, the holiday season brings the annual, and quite popular, Nutcracker performances. Students numbering one hundred plus choose to take part. There are rehearsal fees required of those who do. Attendance is mandatory for performances, but costumes owned by the studio are provided. Fees collected help to defray costs such as theater rent, scenery and all sorts of things that help to make programs such as this run smoothly.

Spring is the time when students have the chance to dance the classical masterpieces. Each April and May, a variety of favorites is programmed, and the talented faculty also presents newly choreographed works. This is a time for celebrating the best of each and every student, and for showcasing the skills of the entire staff.

The Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh may be recognized for its top quality discipline and training of young dancers. Offering excellent classes for youngsters and adults, too, this studio is determined to do the best work for the love of dance. In terms of general Pittsburgh Ballet offerings, this is a high quality studio offering exceptional experiences in its classes and performance opportunities. Discovering what takes place here might be high on the list for parents interested in traditional dancing opportunities for their children.
