How To Look For And Maintain A Sheepskin Rug

By Faith Greenly

A nice touch to make a home seem warmer and rustic is to add a sheepskin rug on the floor. Sheepskin rugs have always been associated with comfort and their white, burly softness adds classic elegance to any living room or bedroom.

There are various classes of sheep rugs which are originally taken from sheep’s wool. Some are a bit costly and very delicate so that it should be handled with care especially when washing. Naturally, they are in white color. You can however, dye them if you want to match it with the color of your room or the color you preferred to.

In buying sheep skin rugs, you have to consider the place where they are manufactured. Known to be of good quality are those coming from Australia, New Zealand and United Kingdom.

The reason they can produce quality rugs is due to the quality of their sheep. These countries have invested a lot and specialize in breeding sheep that produces high quality wool. The wool is softer but the fibers are stronger which is why they last a lot longer than others.

When you are hunting for a sheep skin rug, look for one that is soft and smooth. Turn the rug over and look at the opposite side too to check for its authenticity. This side should be leathery. If it feels like rubber then it’s most likely a fake.

Before purchasing a rug, you have to know how large or small a rug your place can accommodate one without destroying the aesthetic layout of your home. Aside from the size, the degree of smoothness and flexibility of the rug should be selected to your satisfaction.

Taking good care of your sheep rug is to be maintained if you want it to last it for a longer time. Using a dry cleaner could be fine, but if you are using an automatic washer, do not forget to read the instructions carefully or else you will lose your investment.

You can run a wire comb on the rug daily to clean it out and shake off any dust particles. Combing the rug will also fluff out the fur. Another way is to run a vacuum cleaner over it. Whichever way you prefer to maintain your sheep skin rug, just make sure you do it regularly.
