Tips and Suggestions to Help You Learn Japanese
Most people think that learning Japanese is very difficult. Japanese is certainly not simple; compared with Western languages, it has a subtle and poetic quality. With study, however, you will start to pick up on the many beautiful characteristics of this unique language. The problem for some people is that they think Japanese is so hard they never give themselves a chance to learn it. The good news is this: anybody can learn a new language! You just can’t expect it to come easily; learning Japanese does take some work and dedication. With enough time and effort you could be fluent in Japanese before you know what is happening. Fortunately, you can make your study of Japanese a little easier if you just follow some of these suggestions.
One thing you can do is buy or rent Anime videos! You will enjoy this at the same time that you absorb the Japanese language. Anime is a well known type of Japanese animation that is now easy to find. It has become very popular in the Western world and is widely available both dubbed in English and in the original Japanese with English subtitles. It shouldn’t be hard to find Anime; you can find free versions of it online, or you can rent or buy some at a video store. You have to find shows that are in Japanese with subtitles, so you can listen and read the subtitles. Just pay attention to the way words and phrases are used, and you’ll naturally start to develop a vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structure. Learning Japanese by watching Anime is a fun yet effective way to study the language! You may have your own favorite Anime shows, but if you want some recommendations to start with, try TriGun, Fullmetal Alchemist or Cowboy Bebop.
Another good habit to get into is reading Manga. Manga are a form of Japanese illustrated novels that have also been translated into many other languages. These books can be a great way for you to practice your reading comprehension. Reading will get you accustomed to all of the characters and the way they are used in sentences; you will also have to get comfortable with reading from the back of the book to the front, and from right to left on the page. Follow the text in your own language and you’ll start to learn how words are popularly used and current slang and jargon. This can give you some insight into popular culture, which classes and lessons may not do as much. Manga are often very adult in theme, something you should keep in mind when buying them!
You should also use flash cards. Japanese is a complicated language, and you will really need a few sets of flash cards for different purposes. You should have a set that is for memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules. Then you can get a set that teaches you the characters and how to start reading in Japanese. The best method to use is to write the Japanese on one side of the card and the phonetic equivalent in your own alphabet on the reverse. Try to keep the sets from mixing, especially in the beginning, or you could end up confused and frustrated!
As you can see, you can use many methods to learn Japanese. The key to making the process a smooth one is to figure out which learning tips and tricks work best for you. The most important thing to remember is that learning Japanese is something you can do. You can even become fluent one day if you just learn a little more every day!
