What Exactly Is Sample Management?

By William Delreal

No mistakes can be made in the drug discovery process which is long, delicate not to mention important which needs great care in all areas. The best possible efficiency is ensured by pharmaceutical and Biotech companies keeping large chemical libraries to maintain organisation. Of course to maintain their usability, these samples rely on certain conditions as they are very delicate. The process of ensuring the samples can be accessed quickly and are stored in the correct conditions is known as sample management.

Sample management which is also known as compound management consists of various different areas such as storage, retrieval, labelling and sample acquisition. Often robotic computer controlled systems complete theses stages as they are automated. It is possible for this process to become fully automated because of data management, bar-coding systems and quality control checks. Because of its level of importance, pharmaceutical companies usually have a dedicated department for sample management.

There are a huge number of benefits for a large company to use sample management. The controlled environment ensures the samples are kept in optimal conditions to maintain quality. The databases make retrieving a specific sample an easy process through the bar-coding recognition. Of course sample management will improve productivity and accuracy tremendously as thousands of samples can be processed each day.

Although there is an initial outlay for sample management, it is very cheap compared to human use and unneeded errors can be eliminated. Using sample management allows companies to offer their services to more and more customers as their productivity is increased. A lot of need for human involvement in the process is eliminated. Tedious searches for a specific sample using the human eye and human errors can be avoided making this very cost effective.

Health and pharmaceutical companies are able to spend their time on their specialist area and make developments much quicker as sample management allows them to do so instead of wasting time searching for the various essential samples such as protein, acids and blood. The initial outlay for these companies is outweighed dramatically by the benefits and long term cost effectiveness which makes sample management a simple decision.
