We have finally entered the year which has been the source of anticipation for many: the year 2012. There are numerous reasons explaining why folk worry about this year and about December 2012 in particular. Folks are basically panicking because the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012. Many have interpreted the abrupt ending of this 5,125-year-old calendar as a prediction from the ancient Mayans, warning us this date implies the end of the world.

A different reason for concern involves the predictions of the well known seer, Nostradamus. The foreteller is most renowned for his prophecies about the great elimination and possible end of the world caused by a comet that’s anticipated to hit Earth during December of 2012. What makes Nostradamus ‘ prophecies even more frightening are the accuracy with which he foretold countless events, for example WW2 and Hilter.

The year 2012 is interesting on an astronomical level, too. During the December solstice of every year, the Sun and Milky Way align together. Nevertheless for the first time in 25,800 years, a time period known as a “Great Year,” the Earth will also enter into this astral arrangement. Occurring in December of 2012, this special confluence will result in the alignment of the Earth with the Sun and Galactic Equator. Since the Galactic Equator marks the mid-point of our universe, this will place Earth in the very center of the Milky Way universe. This astral occurrence also ties into Egyptian folklore. The Egyptians assumed that we came from the Milky Way and the Nile River is basically the Milky Way’s reflection on Earth. There are also ancient Egyptian predictions saying that a devastating event is about to take place in 2012.

By examining the numerous prophecies and influences concerning 2012, it is clear that something is set to happen. Instead of interpreting these prophecies with fear, many opt to view them in a positive light. While visiting spiritual locales like Egypt and Peru, those directing these sacred travelmystical journeys can and will be offering us alternative interpretations.

According to astrologers 2012 marks the start of the Age of Aquarius, a time of expansion, awareness and consciousness. This implies the year that everybody will “wake up.” People may awaken in other ways and at various times, but the point is that everybody is going to wake. The sole obliteration to occur will be the death of our old selves on our awakening to a new awareness. This new consciousness means accepting ourselves foremost as spiritual creatures with the realisation that our spiritual connection is the most important side of our existence. On occasion the agony that many folks experience in this life feels intolerable; nevertheless the awareness that we are a part of a larger plan can regularly turn this distress into a nearly unspeakable joy. When we are spiritually connected, we experience the pleasures and wonders of our lives that we would otherwise miss. Instead of destruction, let 2012 bring us hope.
