With Determination, You Win

By Vincent Imwensi

The shocking story of how the popular rapper, Fifty Cent (or Curtis Jackson) lost over 50 pounds or (23kg) recently made it to the headlines. He did it to enable him to play the part of an American football player who has been diagnosed with cancer in an upcoming film titled Things Fall Apart.

He lost the weight by going on a liquid diet and spending three hours a day on the treadmill for nine weeks. His appearance after the exercise was so shockingly different compared to how he looked before the exercise that you needed to be told it was the same person. Imagine not eating solid food for over two months plus a rigorous everyday exercise to go with it – that is something!

People’s reactions and opinions concerning this were different across board. To some people, it was an inspiring and a worthwhile achievement especially as it would raise public awareness to the havoc of cancer. But there were those who reacted negatively to it because they thought he was making a mockery of a very serious matter. And of course, there were those who were totally indifferent to it.

Such an accomplishment which was achieved on purpose is too great to be ignored and it carries a message which we shouldn’t miss.
Irrespective of what anyone might think about it, I personally think there is a great lesson that we ought to learn from it. And it is the fact that with determination, you can go far in life and achieve seemingly impossible results.

But determination is not bought in the market. Everyone of us has it because it comes from our own will, decisions and self discipline. So there is really no grounds to complain that it is beyond our reach.

There are a lot of people who easily throw up their hands in the face of difficulties and surrender to their challenges. What they often do not realize is that if they would only bring their determination to bear on such circumstances, things can turn around in their favour.

Of course I am aware that there are some difficulties that cannot be overcome by the power of personal determination. But we must not be too quick to conclude that our challenges belong to that category as we are often tempted to do.

Concerning those difficulties and problems that defy the power of our own personal determination, there is a secret weapon to conquering them and I am going to let you into it. Hand them over to the one with whom all things are possible (and that is God). God is more real and more interest in helping us to overcome our defiant challenges than many people realise.

Here, I am not talking of dead, dogmatic and empty religiosity which is of no real value to anyone. What I am talking about here begins with a real personal relationship with God through the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Believe me, it will open to you a world of possibilities that you never knew existed. I can talk confidently about this because I have proven it first hand – again and again. You will not be disappointed.

My conclusion is simple: personal determination is a powerful weapon for accomplishing enviable goals. With determination, you can overcome limitations, conquer difficulties and accomplish seemingly impossible goals.
