By Johnson Star
People in “high places” are more often than not in more pressuring environments that those below them. There are a lot of things to get stressed over in the workplace – the primary being workload, salary, and unhealthy working environment, followed by interpersonal relationships and other things. There is one often-overlooked factor: the boss. What is even more overlooked is the stress levels of the boss – which is often normal of the employee’s multiplied by two. If you believe you’re stressed over your boss, try imagining how much your boss is getting stressed over his boss. If you are that boss, then do a reality-check and see how much stress you’re passing over from your own superior down to the people you are handling.
Bosses are more prone to developing anger issues, more likely to be driven to depression, and more likely to be agitated, due to the fact that they have more expectations that are failed to be met. They have more responsibilities than they may carry at one time. When you’ve been promoted, you understand that you will be given more workload and responsibilities than your previous status. Over time, you may be able to adjust. If you failed to adapt, and it’s bothering you a lot, then you should consider keeping your stress levels in check.
Among the stress management tools, relaxation techniques are very popular as they are very powerful stress busters. You may have heard something about meditation, an act wherein a person will attempt to stop all thinking processes. When you achieve that state where your mind is completely devoid of all thought, you feel inner peace. Out of all the relaxation practices out there for stress, meditation is the most preferable for a boss that has his own personal office. If you’re a boss, you can simply lock the door and start meditating if you feel you have the tendency to break down soon. It is similar to the concept of self-reflection – only that it is without thinking.
Meditation has its origins in yoga – a spiritual practice which originated in India and has survived for 5000 years. Because of its yogic origins, breathing techniques, postures, and exercises heavily influence the meditative art; as you can see with practitioners who meditate while assuming the lotus position. The yoga-factor alone makes meditation difficult as you have to take time to master them; read articles, books, take classes, and watch instructional videos.
All that effort will be worth it, though. With mastery, meditation can be performed quickly and easily. Another good thing about meditation is that since it’s a yogic aspect, the postures and exercises involved will promote better wellbeing. Consider yoga if you think you’re having too much stressors at work, or feel like you’re being squashed between your boss and your own team. With meditation, stress for bosses like you can be pushed aside for good.
