Handle Cases Of Depression

By Abby Martin

We all experience moments of depression in our day to day lives, but it becomes a significant condition if it lasts for a much extended period of time, or recurs frequently. Depression affects people of all ages and teens tend to get affected quite often. Teens with depression and depression related symptoms and issues are mostly referred to as ‘emo’ by their peers. This however is an act of general typecasting and at times used as a playful reference. However, there is nothing fun or humorous about real depression and its related emotions. Depression is generally characterized by feeling sad, helpless, being down all the time, acting lethargic and at times experiencing some bodily aches and pains. The condition is also associated with stress and irritability. The depressive disorder is thought to be a unipolar one, with the latter affecting only a single spectrum of emotion.

However, for an individual suffering from a bipolar disorder, they tend to experience emotional swings when under depression or/and elation. Depressed people tend to lose interest in relationships; their hobbies, appearance, ability to get enough sleep, and change of appetite. It isn’t uncommon for a depressed individual to have suicidal thoughts, which is then referred to as severe depressed. It is important to never ignore any suicidal thoughts, which have to be dealt with immediately as they may end up fatal in the end.

When someone is depressed, it does not necessarily mean that the person is suffering from depression, but it could be other related or unrelated mood disorders. It is advisable that you consult a qualified doctor, more preferable a psychiatrist to be able to determine the real cause of depression and how it can be treated. Someone suffering from depression should definitely need some counseling services as a qualified counselor can identify the cause and/or source of depression and things that trigger depressive episodes and subsequently recommend possible treatments.

Medications such as antidepressants are normally given to people suffering from depression in an effort to rebalance the chemical imbalances which are believed to trigger the depressive episodes. Even with the medication, it is good to back them up with counseling services, which should act as a monitor of gauging the efficacy of the treatment and the patient’s moods. Further, it is highly recommended that you supplement the medication and counseling with natural ways of treating depression such as getting sufficient sleep, exercising, and eating a healthy and well balanced diet.

People suffering from depression should avoid all alcoholic beverages because it is a known depressant and can exacerbate the condition particularly when it comes to dealing with depression. Further, caffeine should also be limited since a ‘caffeine crash’ can trigger a depressive episode.

In case suicidal thoughts become an issue in a depressed individual, it is highly recommended that the proper authorities be notified as soon as possible. You can call hotlines and act accordingly, especially when someone threatens to commit suicide as it is never good to ignore such threats, lest they come true. A person suffering from depression should get the treatment that they deserve and need in order to get back on their feet again.
