Just about anyone can occasionally have a bad day, but when there are more of them than good days, there could be underlying problems which need to be addressed. There are some basic human needs which must be met if a person is going to be able to feel better about themselves. Let’s take a look at a few of them which are connected with the causes of low self esteem.

Most people have a need to both give and receive attention, and have some form of intimacy and sense of connection to other people. Being isolated and at home all alone can have an adverse effect on a person’s sense of self. Getting out and being involved with other people, not only fulfills this basic need, it can help the individual to feel needed by helping others.

People can often feel as if their lives are totally out of their control, and that their hopes, dreams and desires will never be fulfilled. By finding something to get involved with, it can help over come these feelings and bring about a sense of accomplishment which provides the needed feeling of being in control of their lives, and the safety and security it offers.

It is not always sufficient to simply say thank you to a person. True appreciation comes from returning favors, or being there when someone needs you. This type of behavior can instill that a person has status and is being recognized for all the things they’ve done for you. It also helps them feel connected to some greater purpose than themselves.

People often associate artists as being the only inspired people with creativity and stimulated to greatness. But, most people don’t realize that even the smallest of tasks can involve some very creative thinking. As a result, they can often feel as if they are nothing special, even become angry with their situation.

Many people have pondered the age old mystery of what is the meaning of life, and what purpose do they have, or even why they should set goals. Without a sense of purpose a person can lose interest in all of life, even in keeping their own bodies clean, and maintaining basic health. Knowing that they have a purpose can work wonders in providing a realization of self worth.

Basic human nature was not designed to live as separate individuals who are supposed to be alone. Even prehistoric humans were very actively involved in the inner workings of their tribe. Humans still have tribes that go by the names of family and extended set of friends that seem like relatives, and without these people a person can suffer from some of the causes of low self esteem.

When you tell someone thank you, that might not be enough.
