How To Ride The Unstoppable Waves Of Change

By Barbara Davis

How many times have you ever felt on top of it all, everything was going smoothly, and then suddenly, WHAM! You’re knocked out of balance. How often have you used a certain skill to perform a task so many times that you can do it in your sleep? Maybe, like me, you’ve driven down your street and asked yourself, “Where did that building come from, was it there yesterday?

You probably said “yes” to all of the above. And of course you already know that the answer to the one thing that all these questions have in common is “change!” It seems to me that change occurs so quickly. It happens whether we are ready or not. Many times you don’t get a chance to delay change until it suits your agenda. It simply goes on with or without you. You can choose to sail with the flow of change or choose to be swept over the tides that hold you back.

Change occurs so quickly today, doesn’t it? There was a time when change occurred slowly and methodically. It seems to me that Change used to be subtle and you could ease into the change gradually without any vigorous thought about the occurring change. There may have been times when you were not even aware that change was actually taking place. However, today change happens quickly seemingly at the blink of an eye. Not only does it occur with swift speed, it can wreak havoc on you when you are not prepared. It can leave you thinking, “I must be crazy.” Sometimes it requires all the skills and knowledge you can muster and then some just to deal effectively with some small changes.

Learn to sail with the flow of change. You can begin by changing your attitude about change. For example, you can take on empowering beliefs to give yourself choices rather than limiting beliefs that leave you feeling helpless or trapped. Say to yourself, “I can succeed at this. I have succeeded before.” There is already evidence that you have succeeded at some things in your life. So you know that you can succeed, you’ve done it before.

Think about any limiting beliefs you may hold for a moment. Ask yourself for what purposes do those limiting beliefs serve you. When you begin uncovering evidence that they are not serving you in an empowering way – a way that offers more choices for you, consider looking for new ways of doing things and new ways of thinking about things.

Try looking at change with an attitude of possibility and opportunity. Open yourself up to learning new skills and discovering new ways of doing things. Uncover your own personal strategy for dealing with new situations. Toss out your old limiting expectations for a new and positive approach to new challenges. Create a “can do” attitude. Take on empowering beliefs. Be an agent for change rather than a victim of change. Develop positive affirmations. Uncover a new way of looking at situations.

There are so many other elements and behaviors you can adopt for sailing the waves of change. Above all, take an active approach to change. Discover what you can do and do it. Don’t just sit there and let change roll over you. If one road is blocked, try another. Every time you take some kind of action, you uncover new sources of possibilities.

Find support as you start moving about in the wave of change. Look for people who will offer encouragement and feedback along the way. Seek out those who speak your same language of change or those who have ridden the same wave of change as you are now riding.

Finally, I want you to understand that change is going to go on with or without you. You know that you have the capacity for change. The mere fact that you are reading this post indicates that you want to change in some way. Think about this: The space you’ve always held, the space you’re in today may no longer be there tomorrow. Be ready to move into your new space with confidence.
