Retaining and Motivating Employees: A Supervisors List of New Year’s Resolutions

It’s a time of reassessment and goal setting on not just a personal, but a professional level. We are most tuned in to making changes for the better during the new year.
If you manage employees, a good best practice is to stop to reflect on the past year. What are the management successes that you’d like to duplicate this year? What challenges did you face and what did you learn from these workplace challenges?
Things to think about: Did you make it clear to your direct reports that you were available for questions, concerns? What about making sure that employees got the training and mentoring that they may have needed?
If not, then think about what you can implement today that will reinforce your interest in supporting staff.
A critical goal for the new year as a leader is to follow through on a plan that will increase your employee engagement and efficiency.
Management resolutions to consider are:
1. Always be clear about your expectations of your staff. This will eliminate misconceptions or false impressions.
2. Be receptive to different points of view and recommendations from employees.
3. Meet with your employees regularly.
4. Keep employees motivated and help to develop their careers by mentoring them.
5. Work with your employees to seek out the best career development and training opportunities.
6. Be more understanding of employee concerns and challenges.
7. Don’t be part of the problem but the solution. Give your employees’ leeway to make suggestions and solve problems.
8. Avoid being always right. Listen to your staff before voicing an opinion.
9. Praise your employees for a job well done.
10. When providing constructive criticism, take a positive, ego building approach.
11. Don’t let difficult employee situations get out of control.
Commit to incorporating just one resolution into your management tool kit this year and work on adding new resolutions throughout the year.
