Many people have the notion that management counseling and management consulting are the same, which is actually not so. Management counseling has more to do with personal counseling to help people with issues like anxiety, depression etc., under the pressure of work, whereas management consulting means helping businesses improve their processes, or giving solutions for particular issues.

For a business to analyze and explore new possibilities that will enable it to flourish, consultancy services may be engaged to help. Consultants are independent third parties who have special skills in providing strategy and advice and usually have no participation or connection with the company or its competition. In defining the strategy that will bring the company to success, consultants seek to understand the problems and obstacles facing the company.

Management counseling helps employees stay in-balance mentally and emotionally, while finding the psychological peace-of-mind required to successfully handle interruptions, and the often frustrating multi-tasking demands of today’s competitive business environment. As with other forms of consultancy, corporate counselors can be hired from within the company, or can be brought in from the outside.

Internal management counseling can be helpful for a company because the counselor or personal coach, will be more effective when he interacts with employees day after day. While a management consultant should not have such a connection because he works best when he maintains independence from a business, relationships should be tight for management counseling to be successful.

Business counseling can be effective for any company, no matter how big or small. Counselors can be hired for many reasons. Similar to management consultants, counselors might be needed to talk about business plans and strategies. However, the most important job a counselor has is to help work out the core problems that cause disruption and failure rather than going ahead and putting a plan in action to fix them.

Similar to one-on-one psychological counseling, corporate counseling seeks out, and rids from the organization, psychological obstructions impeding smooth, successful operation. Corporate counseling works to further the mission of the organization to fulfill the company’s long-term goals. Corporate counseling helps to prevent problems from recurring, as well as identifying, describing and correcting potential issues before they become actual problems.

This article stresses the difference between management counseling and management consulting. The former is done on a more personal level, helping managers and employees with problems that they have that might be affecting the business. A management consultant or a personal coach, on the other hand, is focused on the company’s process and developing approaches to fixing specific problems. A consultancy is generally done by a person or firm that is independent of the company or entity being advised. Counseling, however, may be accomplished by hiring an in-house counselor if the company’s size and budget warrant such a position. The article discusses many advantages to this approach.
