Six Tips on Clothing Alterations: Do it Yourself
Ever since the advent of human civilization, a need has emerged for people who can stitch together a wearable dress. Professional tailors do this job, but people come in different sizes, and they change shape with age – therefore, people who can do clothing alterations or remodeling are also required.
Alteration is the job of a specialist as it requires refitting of a completed garment in a way that it doesn’t look or feel awkward. It requires the precision of an engineer and the vision of an artist. Those with some tailoring competence can perform precise alterations by following some simple tips on clothing alterations and, of course, using their own imagination as well.
Dress alterations are usually required for readymade products, since professionally tailored dresses seldom need repair or remodeling, except when the body shape changes. An important point is that people choose their clothes with love and care – and it would be a tragedy if alterations are not done properly.
In the light of above, use the following tips on clothing alterations as a “Do it Yourself” guide.
Don’t cut the dress; pinch, fold and tuck but don’t cut.
Don’t unstitch, a finished garment is made of parts stitched together and it will be difficult to re-stitch them.
Choose the thread type properly according to the fabric.
Before starting on actual alteration, give attention to the type of fabric: is it muslin or knitted of woven. Woven fabric is not forgiving in the same manner as knits.
Construction is the one area where human error magnifies and changes the fit of a garment, therefore, follow the manufacturers’ direction.
Check the accuracy of measurements: begin by taking a garment that fits you well and match them with those of the dress that needs adjustments.
These tips on clothing alterations will help, but for amateurs it may still be advisable to go to a professional who can duplicate the original and alter the garments suitable to one’s needs. This is especially advisable when the dress alterations are required in expensive wedding dress.
