The Benefits Of Trying Organic Clothes

By David Green

Despite the knowledge of the damage that unsustainable habits can have the earth, the decision to take up sustainable living choices is not the easiest thing to do. However, a growing number of communities and businesses are trying hard to become more eco-friendly. For instance, solar power is becoming more accepted. Additionally, there are many little things that everyday people can implement to improve the environment. One of those things is to purchase organic clothing.

You may be familiar with the idea of organic food, but you might well not be so used to organic clothing. What is it anyways? When we refer to organic crops, we mean those that don’t add harmful chemicals to the soil and water. This helps encourage biodiversity within nature.

Traditionally grown cotton is the most extensively used clothing material, and regrettably it’s also the one crop with the single largest negative impact on the ecosystem. Did you know that twenty-five percent of pesticides are used for growing cotton?

Organic cotton, on the other hand, is grown with no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Instead, the crop grows through natural means. More organic materials such as bamboo and soy are also eco friendly sources for organic clothing.

A major plus of organic clothing should be that it is more mild on your skin. As the fibers don’t contain traces of dangerous chemicals, they shouldn’t lead to skin reactions. Additionally, clothing made from bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial.

When we use organic clothing, we lower the concentration of pollutants slipping into the ecosystem. Conventional farming causes hefty amounts of chemicals to get into the land and spread out to the water. This is a major cause of health problems in the modern day. But if we opt for organic apparel, we will be supporting the efforts of organic farming practices which don’t harm the environment.

Some organic clothing fabrics such as bamboo and hemp are extremely durable. They hold up to numerous wash cycles and last longer than clothing from ordinary fabrics.

Anytime we select to wear organic clothing, we are helping out all the employees who grow clothing crops. Their families and homes are spared from the risk of a harmful influx of chemicals that can result from traditional agricultural practices.

With all these advantages, we should not be surprised that a growing number of clothing companies are switching over to producing organic clothing.
