Tips For Buying A Costume At The Right Price

By Dianne Clarke

Most people have a budget when they’re shopping for costumes, regardless of whether they’re buying for children or adults. While some don’t mind spending hundreds of dollars for the perfect look, some people have a very tight budget. People on a tight budget often wonder if they will be able to come up with a great costumer or not.

Everyone wants to feel special when dressed in party or Halloween costumes. Luckily, there are ways to find outfits that will fit every budget, from lavish to low-cost.

Start by being honest about the budget and consider how many people have to wear costumes. Will the entire family be going to a costume party? If so, they’ll obviously all need costumes. If only one person is going to be attending an event, that could be easier on the budget.

Now think about the various places you might find good costumes. You might try looking in the boxes in the attic or raid your grandparent’s closet. Wearing turn of the century or flapper costumes are always a big hit at costume parties. With a little luck you will find things like funny ties, vintage coats, and old jewelry and not have to spend any money.

For those on a more lavish budget, vintage clothing stores may have designer outfits, including 70s clothing with large prints. These could be expensive, but give a great look.

The easiest way to keep the price of a costume low is to make it yourself. Don’t forget, you can use a homemade costume with accessories that are store bought. You can use things like hats, bracelets, and decals to turn a plain costume into a spectacular one.

Another step in finding the right costumes in the right price range is by thinking outside the box. Check out favorite television shows and don’t rule out inanimate objects such as refrigerators or books. By taking a box and embellishing it with some paint and items from craft stores, some amazing costumes can be created.

Group outfits may be very cost effective, especially if everyone wears the same tops and pants. By buying several shirts or leggings at the same time, there may be discount prices on these items. That certainly helps to stretch the budget for costumes.

Think about groups of people like rock bands and school teachers. Don’t forget about sitcoms, having each person dress as a character from the show. This is a great idea for costumes, especially if there are people in your group that aren’t excited about fantasy costumes.

Be sure to look around the house for items that can be recycled and added to purchased costumes. Old egg containers, aluminum foil, boxes, packing material and other items can be added to costumes bought online or in stores, giving them a personal look.

Never rule out any type of store when it comes to finding the perfect items. For example, women might consider looking in the men’s department for whacky hats or ties. Men could look in sporting good stores for ready made work suits that can be turned into costumes. Don’t forget about all the toys like coloring books, wands, and stores that are in the aisles of the grocery stores.

Above all, use some creativity and have some fun. Buying or making your costumes should be a pleasurable experience. You will find that just a little effort can go a long way when coming up with a great costume that everyone will be raving about.
