However, it is certainly possible for futons to be placed on top of a box-spring with a frame being used to hold them in place. Wood-slat and wire-mesh frames are the other two common options.

Replacing a traditional spring-coil mattress can be done for a variety of reasons. Some people prefer the more portable, floppy nature of futons. Others want the very firm back support. Often, futons of the same size are cheaper than spring-coil mattresses, and others just have a personal preference. Be aware of the thickness of your choice, as futons are often thinner than mattresses.

Covers are made for futons, which help keep them clean. Because futons are more likely to be used as couches, or lounging areas than traditional mattresses, many are sold with the cover included.
