Why Wedding Gifts are the Best Things Since Sliced Bread

By Adam Smithski

For couples who will be setting up home together after getting married, wedding gifts were traditionally a source of items for their home which would otherwise have taken a significant time to collect.

From towels and bed linen to crockery, cutlery and kitchen appliances, there are plenty of things which you need when you move in together, and wedding guests like to know that their gifts will be appreciated and used often.

Up until fairly recently, the wedding gift list was almost exclusively centred around items such as these, meaning that the bride and groom could begin married life with a well-appointed house, and guests had the relatively easy task of picking an item from a list or choosing something practical that suited their budget.

Times they are a-changing

In recent years, however, it has become a lot more common for couples to be living together before they tie the knot, sometimes for years and years.

This can mean that they already have a fully furnished house, even occasionally one which is bursting at the seams with stuff, and possibly don’t need to rely on the generosity of their friends and family for wedding gifts to help them furnish their home.

This can mean that their wedding gift list is a chance to upgrade some of their household goods, especially seeing as many couples begin their lives together using the items they had as students or in their first house share.

It can be great to amass a quirky and individual set of items for their home and there are plenty of fun and original ideas such as Mr and Mrs pillow cases or personalised salt and pepper grinders to give them a truly unique and special gift.

Getting out and about

Many couples choose to ask for contributions to their honeymoon as wedding gifts, and this can be a fantastic way of having a dream holiday for those whose budget has all gone on the big day itself.

Some newlyweds have a destination booked and ask their guests to contribute to activities such as meals out and experiences to enjoy whilst they are away, whereas others have a fund which they will spend on a break of their dreams after the wedding.

For couples who love to travel, this is an ideal way to share their passion with their friends, and many set up a blog or social media site to allow their guests to see them enjoying their wedding gifts in real time.

Surprise, surprise

There are many couples who have everything they want, so prefer to be surprised when it comes to wedding gifts, and this is where their guests can really come into their own.

Whether they are outdoorsy folk who like to challenge themselves physically, or prefer more cerebral activities, you can find the perfect gift for them to enjoy together as a great start to a lifetime of wedded bliss.

There are plenty of wedding gifts for couples which are the perfect way to encourage them to spend some quality time together, such as an overnight stay in a hotel or a night out together to see a show in the West End.

Perhaps they like to try new things, in which case you could introduce them to the sport of canyoning, which will see them jumping off waterfalls, plunging into rivers and scrambling in and out of water and up and down the banks.

Picking wedding gifts should be a pleasure, and if you are finding it hard then it’s time to start focussing on finding something fun for the couple.

That way you can ensure that wedding gifts are great for everyone – they give the guests a way to show the happy couple how happy they are for them and they give newlyweds something special to enjoy in the first flush of their marriage.
