Hog rings are something that I can not imagine most people even know about. I know I did not before researching this article. They’re used in several applications and on items some of us use every day.
Imagine the small metal ring used to anchor a chain-link fence to the vertical supports that hold the fence in place. This is an example of a hog ring in operation. They’re also used extensively in automobile upholstery work. They’re the clips that hold everything in place underneath the seats.
As most professional trades-people know, having the right tool for a particular job can make a big difference. Sure, you can sometimes find a way to do the task with a different type of tool but it will almost always end up being more difficult and a whole lot more frustrating. Attaching hog rings without the use of ‘specialty’ hog ring pliers is a perfect example. Why not save the time and effort and go for the real thing?
If a job you do frequently involves the use of hog rings one option is to use a pneumatic tool. This is faster and easier than the ‘manual’ method and will save time and effort. Rings used in these machines come in a wide assortment of sizes and materials. Aluminum, stainless steel and galvanized steel are the most commonly used.
Hog rings are also typically used in the manufacture of crab pots and lobster traps. It’s also common to find them on sailboats, where they’re used to fasten the rigging. Again, the proper tool makes the job quicker and simpler. When picking a tool, you’ll be faced with the choice of buying a lower quality, foreign-made item or a more expensive but distinctly higher quality model made in America. Spend the extra money in this instance. The benefits will far outweigh the extra expense.
Top quality will always be worth paying more for. Paying double for something built to last a lifetime makes more sense than replacing a substandard imitation which will probably break or wear out and will NEVER work as well.
Electrician tools can be very specific in the nature of their functions and a professional will have a wide array of various tools and equipment. When you’re dealing with the jolting power of electricity you don’t want to be fooling around with a tool that’s a piece of junk. You’ll pay more for the top-quality pieces but it will be well worth the extra money spent.
