Kitchen Faucet Parts: Basic Info On Price Pfister Faucet Stems

By Lester Dinglas

The actual components that frequently fail in a kitchen faucet are the internal components; the truth is some of the parts are actually designed to fail, for a better reason. Just like the brass or bronze bushing on motorized kitchen appliance, they are made to wear first to avoid it from destroying the more costly shafting. In kitchen faucets, to maintain the main casing, the stem is designed using a softer alloy like brass. While we open and close the faucet, the brass stem slowly wears, little by little, till the whole tread finally disappear and can no longer apply pressure to the rubber seal regardless how much you turn it. When this happen, a leak occurs, and to repair it, the stem is required to be replaced with a fresh one. Usually you can have a replacement faucet stem at a cheaper price range, about below $10, a lot cheaper compared to if you will pay for the whole faucet.

The other kitchen faucet parts that frequently wears or break up is the rubber seal. Constructed of elastic soft rubber they are used to seal the valve mechanism within the faucet. Each time you tighten up or rotate the knob to close it, the stem forces it against the valve seat. Every time you close the faucet, the rubber seal is pushed in between the stem and the valve seat. Visualize how many times you do this in one day. Sooner or later, the rubber seal can lose its rubberize characteristics and will become fragile, breaking into tiny pieces.

As soon as this happens, a drip will appear and no matter how we tighten the knob it will still flow because there is no more rubber seal to shut it. Changing the rubber seal is quite simple, they are normally attached to the end of the stem, held in place by a small screw. To restore it you will have to isolate the top portion of the faucet and remove the stem. After that, remove the screw that is keeping the rubber seal with a screwdriver and then insert the fresh rubber seal and put back the screw to hold it back in place.

Usually when there is a faucet leak, changing the rubber seal will solve it. A lot of people also do this simply because they want to save money, changing only the rubber seal is very cheap compared to ordering the full set of repair kit. But normally it is not the only one contributing to it; it also could possibly be the stem or maybe a busted spring and valve seat. And so, to make sure that you actually fix it, most people replace all the internal components especially the stem and the rubber seal by using a kitchen faucet restoration kit. Faucet restoration kits usually consist of the stem, rubber seals or o-rings, seats or valve seats, spring, a special wrench, and sometimes it also includes the knob. On some brands, an instruction handbook is also included, complete with an exploded view and detailed instruction on how to dismantle and construct the kitchen faucet.

There are also faucet parts that you can purchase to restore your kitchen faucet to its original or shinny look. These parts are referred to as overhauling kit. Compared with repair kits which normally include internal parts, overhauling kit contains the external parts or the combo of the 2. It includes a pair of fresh knobs and trims with various finish like chrome, brass and gold plated finish. If you just refurbished your kitchen area, you can also adjust the overall look of your faucet to complement the new dcor instead of purchasing a fresh set of faucet which is very expensive not to talk about the labor expenses.

When ordering a kitchen faucet replacement parts it is recommended to purchase an additional set or two if you have several faucet around your place, store it in a safe location for an easy replacement the next time you need it. Repairing your kitchen faucet by yourself will save you a great deal of money on labor expenses but if you really don’t know what you are doing or if you really don’t have any experience doing them or if you don’t have the right plumbing tools, it is much better to hire a qualified plumber to avoid further ruining it.
